KEMRI scientist shot dead watching World Cup in Kisumu

A scientist at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) was shot dead in a night club in Kisumu.

Professor Peter Odada Sumba who was a principal scientist at KEMRI in Kisian, off Kisumu – Busia Highway,was enjoying a world cup match at Rainbow Bar and Restaurant in Tieng’re, Kisumu when four gun men sought him out and led him out of the entertainment joint.

The Professor was shot on the back next to his car, revealed one of the witnesses.

The researcher was then rushed to the Agha Khan Hospital where he was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before being pronounced died on Sunday morning.

Kisumu West OCPD Winston Mwakio confirmed the incident stating that the attackers were in a motorbike which was later impounded by the police.They were armed with AK47 rifles and made away with Ksh. 2000 and a television set. The attackers also injured two other football fans at the joint. One of the victims of the attack is recuperating at the Jaramogi Teaching and Refferral Hospital in Kisumu.

The OCPD added that theĀ  police were pursuing the attackers.
